Eriksens Plads
At Eriksens Plads in Marstal, you’ll find traces of the town’s proud shipbuilding tradition. Here, you can explore historic shipyard sites, enjoy life at the harbour and take a break in the green surroundings close to the water.

A stronghold of wooden shipbuilding
Sheltered by Marstal’s large rubble-stone jetty, which was built by sailors on a voluntary basis, lie reclaimed harbour areas where shipyards have been established. One of these is Eriksens Plads, where the Marstal Søfartsmuseum (Marstal Maritime Museum) has found its home.
Today, the square is a vibrant cultural hub where the history of the harbour meets the experiences of the present.
As a visitor, you can explore the shipyard buildings, maritime details and traces of the craftsmanship that made Marstal famous as a seafaring town. The large replica schooner on the square gives an impression of the size of the ships that were once built here and creates an atmospheric setting for your visit.
A break by the water
Eriksens Plads is also a green oasis by the harbour. Here you can make yourself comfortable at tables and benches, enjoy the view of harbour life or take a break on your cycle or walking tour through Marstal. The barbecue area makes the square the ideal spot for a relaxing time in the open air.
From the square, you also have a great vantage point for observing life at the harbour. The shipyard is still in operation; ships come and go, the shipyard’s activities set the pace, and the Marstal Maritime Museum’s own vessels are moored at the quay.
History for children and adults
For families, Eriksens Plads is a place where children can explore ships, shipyards and harbour life with their own eyes.
For history enthusiasts, the area offers an insight into the shipbuilding tradition that has shaped Marstal over generations.
