Get to know a special tradition on Ærø
On Shrovetide Monday, Ommel Beboerhus opens its doors for a special local tradition: Rendemasker. In small groups, the Rendemasker make their way around the village and drop by Ommel Beboerhus throughout the evening.
Costumes, voices and performances are all part of the fun, as the idea is to keep everyone guessing who is hiding behind each Rendemasker. And trying to work out who is who is all part of the entertainment.
Between visits, there is plenty of time to chat and enjoy the cosy atmosphere at Ommel Beboerhus. There is usually a communal dinner while everyone waits for the next Rendemasker to arrive. You can find more information about the event and registration on the Ommel Beboerhus website.
When the Rendemasker come together
Later in the evening, the Rendemasker gather at Ommel Beboerhus. You can join in the vote for the best Rendemasker before the winners are chosen and, at last, the people behind the Rendemasker reveal themselves.
The evening at Ommel Beboerhus gives you a glimpse into a Shrovetide tradition that is still very much alive on Ærø. Everyone is welcome to drop by and join in.
